First, determine the basics: frame, propellers, and battery. Frame wheelbase determines propeller diameter, which in turn decides the motor size range: 1.5–2 inches with wheelbase 80–110mm for 1.5–2 inch propellers, 3 inches with wheelbase 130–150mm for 3 inch propellers, 5 inches (mainstream) with wheelbase 210–250mm for 5 inch propellers, 6–7 inches for long‑range with wheelbase 280–330mm for 6–7 inch propellers. Battery S‑count (voltage): small drones/indoor use 1S–2S (3.7–7.4V), mainstream 3–5 inch drones use 4S(14.8V)/6S (22.2V), long‑range/large propellers use 6S–8S.

Core parameter: KV value (RPM/torque tendency). KV = no-load speed per volt (RPM/V), which determines the motor's characteristics. High KV: fast speed, aggressive response, low torque, matched with small propellers/low S, suitable for racing/freestyle. Low KV: slow speed, high torque, high efficiency, matched with large propellers/high S, suitable for long-range/load-carrying. Golden matching rule (KV×S≈high-efficiency range). 5-inch (2306/2207): 4S → 1700–2200KV (range 7000–8500), 6S → 1500–1800KV. 3-inch (1404/1505): 3S–4S → 3500–5000KV. 2-inch/indoor: 2S → 6000–9000KV; 1S → 17000–25000KV.

Stator size (diameter × height, e.g., 2306). The first two digits represent diameter: the larger it is, the stronger the torque and the bigger propellers it can handle, with 22–23mm being mainstream for 5-inch drones. The last two digits represent height: the higher it is, the better the efficiency at mid-to-high throttle but the heavier the motor, with 06–07mm commonly used for 5-inch drones. For racing and freestyle, 2207/2306 motors are recommended as they are light and responsive, while for long-range and free flying, 2307/2408 motors are more suitable with taller stators and more stable mid-throttle performance.
Propeller matching (key load): High KV motors should be matched with small diameter and low pitch propellers such as 5038 and 5040 to avoid overcurrent and overheating, while low KV motors should be matched with large diameter and medium to high pitch propellers such as 5149 and 6045 to achieve high torque efficiency, and the taboo is matching high KV motors with large propellers which will cause a sharp increase in current and burn out the ESC or motor.
